Have you been reading articles in women's magazines about all those studies coming out now, about how Lipitor and other statins don't work the same on women as men?
I went through some of the original studies, and boy, what an eye-opener. Sure, statins will lower a woman's cholesterol just like they will lower a man's, but they don't change her risk of heart attack! (they do lower a man's risk) Her risk is the same, whether she takes the drugs or not!
But, if she takes a fiber supplement instead (like Metamucil) which also lowers cholesterol, her heart attack risk DOES go down. If she changes her diet, risk goes down. If she adds omega-3's to increase her good cholesterol, risk goes down. If she gets exercise (which also increases good cholesterol) her risk goes down.
The pharm researchers have only just started taking a look at various drugs to see if they act differently in men vs women. |
